"GREEN JOBS, WHAT GREEN JOBS”

Essay by Jeff Lassle

December 21, 2009 [EDITORIAL – “GREEN JOBS, WHAT GREEN JOBS”] Essay by Jeff Lassle Green Jobs, What Green Jobs? It is Sunday evening and normally I would be relaxing waiting to get up early in the morning and begin the never ending war of working as an international trader in forest products. The industry is most likely one of the largest industries in the world and has existed long before I was borne and longer than everyone living today, including our forefathers. Trade has been the staple industry since the days that the first ships were built to cross the vast distances of our oceans. My former career was a prosperous gainful career, with people involved in the industry boasting incomes of well over 100k yearly and some into the millions of dollars. Instead I look forward to another workless day, being unemployed now for a year and nothing in sight to end this nightmare, a nightmare created by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the “Green Movement.” CARB enacted harsh air toxic control measures on many forest products, products that are clumped together and known as composite panels; in layman terms plywood, medium density fiberboard and particle board. There is a nasty compound, as CARB states, called formaldehyde in these panels (and has been for over 50 years) as it is the glue that holds your sofas, cabinets, desks and a thousand other items together. The emission of these products of formaldehyde were mostly set by the Housing and Urban Development Agency (HUD) at .2 part per million (PPM). Well that wasn’t good enough for CARB as they wanted to be number one in the world for their stance on environmental issues so they dropped it down to .08 PPM and then down to .05 PPM. To make a long story short, this drop in emission will now save .16 people out of the entire 38 million population of California over a 70 year span of time from a disease called nasal cancer (known causes for this cancer are genetics, the hpv virus, and smoking). Even though this compound is a natural compound, yes every person exhales it naturally as you produce the compound in your body naturally; it is now a favorite target for CARB and its environmental engine. Product we the industry purchased when it was legal to buy this product at the current emissions was no longer legal to sell and CARB would not allow it to be sold in the State of California. Millions of dollars were lost due to rules that clearly had no benefit. Since my career ended after 20 some years, I went on the fast track to find another and with a background in science and a tremendous background in domestic and international business, It was thought it would not be long at all to land another career somewhere. This was not the case in California. Daily I would peruse the job advertisements, the on-line job sites of Monster, Career Builders, every where I could get a list of jobs including headhunters in this state or for that matter anywhere in the country. I read on the news that our president and our state officials were saying that all these green jobs were being created in light of the “Green Movement” and anthropogenic global warming laws and regulations that were being developed. These jobs were everywhere they stated ever so

December 21, 2009 [EDITORIAL – “GREEN JOBS, WHAT GREEN JOBS”] Essay by Jeff Lassle proudly and I thought “hey” I can do that as I was one of the first to push this developing solar industry in California and as an international trader had already sourced solar panels from Spain and China long before it was even popular. My degrees in academia were in the science professions so I easily understood the physics of solar energy. I was a perfect fit for that industry. Think again. My business background as an international commodity trader was extensive. A trader not only sells, he must also develop and purchase the commodity and we are not talking about a UPS or Federal Express shipments , but shipments that would fill up a giant break bulk ship holding several thousand truckloads on one ship, or by container ship, bottom line we are talking about how business works and how import and export trade works from the standpoint of products not manufactured here in the U.S. but brought in for our factories here or exported to other countries for their manufacturing industry. The trader is the first line of American businessman supplying factories the goods to compete in the world market. My buys and sales in my career were approaching one billion U.S. dollars on imports and exports. So I had more than enough business experience to land these green jobs, so I thought. Back tracking to my earlier career as a scientist for the Montana Environmental Management Division and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, I now posses the “Green” background or experience to raise an eyebrow or two to get a job in this upcoming job boom known as the “Green Explosion”. At the Environmental Management Division(we called it the Montana EPA), I worked as a scientist involved in research, rules and regulation writing, enforcement of environmental laws involving hazardous compounds such as agent orange, sodium monofluoracetate, pcb’s and the 2,4-D miscarriage issue as well as hundreds more of the issues of 20 some years ago. So one would think I now would have the “Right Stuff” to get a job in this “Green Explosion” of jobs. President Obama promised there were jobs. The fact of the matter in the entire year of looking for a position, I could count on one hand the number of green jobs I had noticed on the job boards on the internet or anywhere I was looking. Seven days a week, I would peruse these sites for offerings and of the few I came across and applied for, only one called back to talk to me, a solar company in Sacramento. He wanted to hire me based on my credentials but could only pay in stock options. The job was to go door to door knocking on doors selling solar systems. I might as well be a brush salesperson and then began looking back at my extensive knowledge of international trade and if one asked what it would cost to ship a container out of Lianyungang, China to the Port of Norfolk, Virginia, I knew it in my head. I speculated on millions of dollars worth of products for the North American market and made my past companies millions of dollars in profit and now I am faced with going door to door begging someone to buy a solar system for their home. There was another job on line that I ran across over that year and the requirements of that job consisted of knowledge of the worldwide forestry issues as a public spokesperson for a national group in the environmental field. This person should have knowledge of the world’s practices in forestry. I have a

My knowledge of forestry practices stretches from Brazil, Europe, Russia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia and China with hands on experience teaching these countries the proper way to abide by U.S. laws and requirements such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), compliance with CARB rules where scientific analysis of emission had to be complied to by factories in China. I have done that did that and worked with environmental groups such as IBAMA in Brazil, Greenpeace and met them at conventions and trade shows. I had more experience than any professor teaching the subject and I did not receive a call back. There was no job, they were just fishing. I am still looking for that “Green Job”. I stopped the Midwest waterfowl season one year, many years ago because I found a toxic compound in Sunday Creek in Montana which tainted waterfowl and other animals with this poison and subsequently shut down the entire hunting season for a while throughout that fly zone. How more “Green” can I get? I know what a green job is now and how to get one that doesn’t exist. You must first be a lawyer, a lawyer with no science background but a lawyer who is an activist. A political science undergraduate degree doesn’t hurt also as that is as one can see, is a science; well maybe not. I do know that a Dr. Hien T. Tran, the chief architect of the diesel rules in California acquired his job by purchasing his Ph.D in Applied Statistics from Thornhill University at 244 Madison Avenue, New York City; a mailbox. Yes, for one thousand dollars Tran received a Ph.D in one week of work and with that money one gets a Magna Cum Laude (first in class). Can I get one of those so I can get a job? The rules and research Tran conducted will put thousands of people out of work and their families, like me, sending them into the job market trying to find that one green job that fits them. That one green job out of five that I saw offered over the last year. May the best man win. In summary, the rhetoric by our politicians that “green jobs” are flourishing and are plentiful in California or anywhere in the United States is entirely incorrect. There are no green jobs. There are no green jobs I see that are worth making a career of in the future other than if one wants to work for the state or federal government. Politicians want you to believe there will be jobs to replace the hundreds of thousands of jobs they are taking away from us due to their agenda on radical environmental laws that have no benefit to Man or the environment. Take it from me, there are no green jobs. I have gone on in search of another color of job. Jeff Lassle Fallbrook, California
